best aviation movie ever

NOOOOOO!! Not that.... anything but that....

The top aviation movies as chosen by over 10,000 visitors to AirVenture

1. Top Gun
2. Twelve O'Clock High
3. Memphis Belle
4. Battle of Britain
5. Spirit of St. Louis
The Great Waldo Pepper

The others are so much better than Top Gun. Don't even get me started on all the things wrong with that movie. That's what you get when you poll the masses. Not knockin my generation, but they do not know what good movies are. Does anyone have any others to add to the list?

H/T Daily Aviator.

I'll give it to ya, Top Gun technically is a farce (an F-14 going into a turning fight with ANYTHING outside of a locomotive is going to result in one dead tomcat), but you gotta admit it's got style!

Admittedly, Tom Cruise is nuts. And who wants to live on a boat? Not me. Fact is, no other movie has been made about fighter jocks lately that's so identifiable. That's why Top Gun wins.

How about Flight of the Phoenix?

Top Gun, you gotta be kidding this Flyboy. Who did they poll, Cruise's family and his Church?
Maybe they were asleep during In Harm's Way, Midway and a ton of other movies that were head and shoulders above top Gun. As for the Memphis Belle, the only factual part of that movie was the title. My wife and I knew the crew and they were not very happy with the way they were portrayed in the movie. Must be why we no longer go to movies.

SO glad that the Great Waldo Pepper made the list - an unforgettable movie.

And let's face it, the only reason Top Gun made it to the list - and in the #1 spot - isn't about the flying, it's about the volleyball scene.

SV,

Please elaborate on your opinion of the F-14's ability in a turning fight. A-models were underpowered, making a sustained turning engagement colorful, but all F-14s possessed exceptional instantaneous turn capability. The later "B" and "D" models with the 'big" engines added a very good sustained turn ability.

I would add "The Blue Max" to the list, btw.

The Aviator was pretty good - although the cgi stuff is not as exciting as actual air-to-air footage.

How about
"The Bridges at Toko-Ri"
"811 Squadron" Brit flik about Mosquitoes
"Dam Busters" Lancasters against the Rhone Valley dams.
"Fighter Pilot" mid 50's flik about F86's in Korea
All of the Jimmy Stewart/SAC films

Chic(k),

I second "Strategic Air Command" those B-36's and then the B-47's were excellent!

Then of course, 12 O'clock high.

Respects,

AW1 Tim

The Bridges at Toko-Ri is a realistic, gritty, *good* version of Top Gun.

In other words, it's everything Top Gun isn't.

And any movie that gives a prominent role to the B-36 gets my vote. (Strategic Air Command.)

The Hunters (A Korean War F-86 flick)has some great air to air stuff in it. Too bad the rest of the movie doesn't measure up.

Flyboys...the newish WWI flick wasn't too bad, but I was watching it in a trailer in Iraq...just about anything is watchable here.

The Great Santini...not much flying but it was about a flyer.

But 12 O'Clock High wins the award as best for me.

What about The Right Stuff? Should be included BY DEFAULT!!

Also, "30 Seconds Over Tokyo"

..at least they didn't pick Stealth (though I have to admit, Jessica Biel looks good in a flight suit)

Sheesh, Flight of the Intruder! I'll never forget the ending where the downed pilot is calling in CAS on himself because he knows he's dying, and he tells the AFAC, "Alpha Michael Foxtrot". My son turned to me and said, "What's that mean, Dad?" and I of course replied, "Adios Mother Fucker".

Casca

"The Right Stuff" -- ermm ... hard to say it's the best aviation movie ever ... but, it's in my video collection (BTW: thanks for the reminder that I'm overdue to watch it again).

Nah, but all of you missed the best aviation movie ever: "Airplane"

*ducks*

Admission: Top Gun is still one of my favorite movies of all time.
(that being said, I'm in it for the entertainment there, not realism).

There are definately many far better aviation movies. Top Gun, however, does have some of the best aerial footage ever shot.
